Despite ripping from the Kiss playbook of hard rock, "Tonight You Belong to Me" was one of the first solo songs released by the band's rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist, singer-songwriter Paul Stanley. His self-titled debut solo LP came out in 1978 via the Casablanca label, and was part of a quartet of solo albums released by the members of Kiss on the same day, 18th September, with records from Peter Criss, Ace Frehley, and Gene Simmons also surfacing. Paul Stanley's offering went to number 40 on the US Billboard album chart and featured all original songs, unlike his band members, who each included a cover song on their albums.
