Some songs tend to take on a whole new meaning after the artist is gone. Such is the case of country music star Kenny Rogers' "Goodbye," a rediscovered breakup ballad that was originally featured on the singer's greatest hits collection The First 50 Years, released in 2009. Written by Rogers' good friend Lionel Richie, who also wrote his Number 1 hit "Lady," "Goodbye" was recorded in a session with Tony Brown shortly after his 2006 album, Water and Bridges. Initially dismissed by Rogers, who didn't think it was strong enough of a song for the radio, "Goodbye" showed up along three other previously unreleased tracks on the Time Life compilation The First 50 Years and was then forgotten for a long time. Following Rogers' death in March 2020, his former label Capitol Nashville sent the track to country radio as a tribute to the late singer and re-released it as a single, fueling a renewed interest in his music.
