Originally released in 2017 by Papua New Guinean singer Justin Wellington and Solomon Islands group Small Jam, summer 2021 smash "Iko Iko" was given a new lease of life thanks to a TikTok dance trend. The song is a standard that dates back to 1953 in New Orleans – written and released as a single under the original title of "Jock-A-Mo by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford and his Cane Cutters – and is lyrically rooted in Mardi Gras. For their update, Justin Wellington and Small Jam refitted the lyrics (adding in "bestie") to depict a bright, sunshine-filled picture of island life ("Start my truck / let's all jump in / Here we go together / Nice cool breeze and big palm trees / I tell you, life don't get no better"). The Louisiana staple, which was a Hot 100 hit for the late New Orleans legend Dr. John in 1972, has shown up in various movies, including The Big Easy, The Skeleton Key, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, The Hangover, K-9, Mission Impossible 2 and others.
