First released on March 19, 2021, "Hold On" is an emotive and upbeat pop song that, much like The Weeknd’s celebrated "Blinding Lights" from the previous year, is heavily indebted to 80s synth-driven pop music. The song was written by Justin Bieber in collaboration with Ali Tamposi, Jon Bellion, and producers Andrew Watt and Louis Bell. Because the song utilizes elements from the 2011 Gotye smash hit "Somebody That I Used to Know", its writers Walter De Backer and Luiz Bonfá are also given songwriting credits. Its hopeful lyrics about staying strong in the face of adversity are given a propulsive boost by the driving rhythm, which evokes the sound of The New Romantics. The song reached Number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, and featured a music video starring Justin Bieber alongside Taiwanese-American actress Christine Ko.
