Originally written by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody – and inspired by Sedaka's favorite classical composer Frederic Chopin, as well as soul legend Roberta Flack – soaring easy-listening ballad "Solitaire" was made famous by The Carpenters, who recorded the song for their 1975 album Horizon. With the song's lyrics and concept cooked up by the artist Phil Cody, who had recently gone through a divorce and wrote from experience, the personal song revolves around a card game of solitaire as the protagonist tries to heal his broken heart: "There was a man / A lonely man / Who lost his love / Through his indifference / A heart that cared / That went unshared / Until it died / Within his silence". In 2021, award-winning US artist Josh Groban put his own melismatic and classically-led, strings-laced spin on the song for the deluxe version of his 2020 album Harmony, which features 10 covers of classic songs including "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash.
