"Caruso”, the ninth track on Josh Groban's 2003 David Foster-produced Closer album – which debuted at Number 4 on the Billboard 200 albums and was the top-selling classical crossover album of the 2000s – captures the singer-actor in all his Italian finery for a classical crossover epic. The gently swelling mandolin and warm current of strings that open the track, combined with the flowing piano melody, add a distinctively European feel as Josh Groban sings his heart out in Italian for a heart-wrenching song about a dying man. "Caruso" was originally written by Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla in 1986 as a tribute to late Italian operatic tenor Enrico Caruso and rose to Number 2 on the Italian Singles Chart following the death of Lucio Dalla in March 2012. "Caruso" has been covered by numerous other artists, including Katherine Jenkins for her 2004 album Second Nature and Celine Dion live in concert with Florent Pagny in 2017.
