"Carey" is a song by Joni Mitchell from her iconic album Blue. The auto-biographical song was inspired by her time in Crete, Greece. The singer/songwriter had recently gone through a breakup with musician Graham Nash, so she and a girlfriend decided to explore the cave-dwelling hippie community of Matala on the south side of Crete. It was there she met Carey Radiz, a red-haired, cane-carrying American who worked as a cook at the Mermaid Cafe. "Come on, Carey, get out your cane / I'll put on some silver / Oh you're a mean old Daddy, but I like you." The two became romantically involved, and Mitchell presented Radiz with the song for his 24th birthday. The relationship was short-lived, but a Radiz reference found its way into another song on Blue. Mitchell mentions her time with a "red, red rouge" in her song, "California."
The backing track for "Carey" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
