After laying down roots in the '50s and '60s as a southern bluesman before fully embracing the soul era, late axe-wielding hero Johnny "Guitar" Watson – commander of the Fender Stratocaster - entered the '70s as a funk-blues maverick with a virtuosic style. The Etta James-approved singer later picked up a Grammy nomination as well as blazing a trail for hip-hop; he has been sampled by everyone from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and Jay-Z to Mary J. Blige and Redman. "Superman Lover" shows the hat-wearing crusader at the peak of his powers, vivifying his "X-ray vision" and lines like "I can leap tall buildings in a single bound / When it comes to getting over you, baby" with stone-cold funk-blues. "Superman Lover" was included on his 1976 album Ain't That a Bitch, and featured on the soundtrack of the 2013 action-adventure video game Grand Theft Auto V.
