Johnny Cash was known for being a prolific writer. He wrote poems, two autobiographies, a novel, and several of his big hits, including "I Walk the Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues." But the Man in Black appreciated a good song even if he didn't write it and often covered songs by the top songwriters of the day. Cash used Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man" as the title track for American III: Solitary Man album. Released in 2000 and produced by Rick Rubin, the stripped-down arrangement featured background vocals from Tom Petty. With its moody lyrics over minor chords, the song was a perfect fit for the complex performer who often tackled dark themes of loneliness and isolation in his songs. Cash received a Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance.
