Johnny Cash breathes life into a mini-western plot in some edge-of-your-seat storytelling that begins, as country songs often do, "early one morning" and ends with death and 'the gallows'. Originally written by country and western fan Sting – and released on his 1996 album Mercury Falling - Johnny Cash covered "I Hung My Head" for season six of US crime drama The Shield, specifically in the premiere, where it was played over the opening and closing of the record. "With time to kill / I borrowed Jebb's rifle / And sat on the hill / I saw a lone rider / Crossing the plain / I drew a bead on him / To practice my aim," Johnny Cash sings in the opening verse, recounting an idle morning that takes a horror-filled turn, "My brother's rifle / Went off in my hand / A shot rang out / Across the land / The horse, he kept running / The rider was dead" and he 'prays for God's mercy'.
