The murder ballad "Cocaine Blues" was originally written by T.J. "Red" Arnall in 1944. Based upon the traditional folk song "Little Sadie," the song tells a bleak tale of a man who, after killing his wife under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, flees to Mexico and becomes a busking musician to financially support his drug usage. In the end, he is eventually arrested and sentenced to spend 99 years in the Folsom State Prison. The track was further popularized by Roy Hogsed and the Rainbow Riders, whose version climbed to Number 15 on the US country charts in 1947. In the following years, the song's popularity reached new heights after Johnny Cash performed a live rendition at his legendary 1968 Folsom Prison concert. Prior to that, The Man in Black had included the track with some minor lyrical changes in his 1960 LP Now, There Was a Song! under the title "Transfusion Blues." He would re-record it once again in 1979 for his 62nd studio album Silver.
