Johnny Burnette rubbed shoulders with Elvis in Memphis during the '50s, and formed the Rock and Roll Trio with his brother Dorsey Burnette and their mutual friend Paul Burlison in 1952, going on to refine his brand of raw and rugged rockabilly throughout the '50s and '60s. Released in 1957, "Rock Billy Boogie" is the perfect embodiment of his sound; a riotous, beat-driven rock 'n' roll racket that has stood the test of time. It was one of a flurry of songs released by Johnny Burnette before his untimely death on August 14th, 1964, when he was killed in a boat crash. Neo-rockabilly artist Robert Gordon later named his 1979 album after "Rock Billy Boogie," also covering the song as the album's opening track. Released on leased on RCA Records, the LP went to number 106 on the Billboard 200 chart and furthered Robert Gordon's reputation as a bona fide rockabilly revivalist with a knockout voice.
