"Greased Lightnin'" is a song from the 1971 stage musical Grease; the film and soundtrack were recorded in 1978. Actor John Travolta, who plays Danny Zuko in the film, sings lead vocals on this song. In the original play, the song is performed by the character of Kenickie. The song is named after Danny's (or Kenickie's) car, which he is eager to repair to make it suitable not only for street racing but for winning over girls as well. Danny's confidence in the car leads him to declare that it's supreme. The song's themes feature several sexual double entendres about cars and women, as well as outright explicit language. In fact, "Greased Lightnin'" was censored for radio, which affected its performance on the United States singles charts. However, it was in the Top 10 in many EU countries, as well as number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. The track features an infectious 1950's rock feel and an American 12-bar blues rhythm. Among its many producers are Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees and Albhy Galuten, the latter of whom produced the soundtrack for John Travolta's runaway hit film the year prior, Saturday Night Fever.
