John Legend spent some time simmering away behind the scenes, playing piano on Lauryn Hill's Top 40 hit "Everything Is Everything" (1999), before edging into the spotlight as a solo star after releasing his debut album Get Lifted (2004) on Kanye West's GOOD Music imprint. Two decades later, and he now has a grand total of twelve Grammy Awards under his belt, as well as an Oscar for Best Original Song and a Golden Globe Award for co-writing "Glory" from Selma. He released his seventh studio album, Bigger Love, in 2020, which won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, and in 2021 unleashed a string of singles including "In My Mind" with Alok and "You Deserve It All." Released in 2022, "Dope" is another standalone single, which was co-written with Charlie Puth, Ryan Tedder, and US rapper and singer JID, who also contributes his vocal talents to this upbeat, sun-speckled slice of pop-soul.
