This Francophone reimagining of the 1968 single "Waterloo Road" by British psychedelic group Jason Crest was first released in 1969 but became an anthem during France's 'gilets jaunes' protest movement, which began in November 2018. The English rendition of the song was a homage to the titular London road while the French version, which is infused with more than a whiff of Paris, was updated by lyricist Pierre Delanoë and sung by French singer Joe Dassin. Located on Paris's iconic Avenue des Champs-Élysées, the song depicts the story of a spontaneous encounter between a man and a woman on the street, which ultimately results in a night of singing, dancing, and romance. "Les Champs-Élysées" eclipsed its English peer in the European charts, reaching number four in Wallonia (Francophone Belgium) as well as charting in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and West Germany. The song also notably plays in the closing credits of the Wes Anderson classic The Darjeeling Limited (2007).
