First written and recorded by Jimmie Rodgers in 1925, and later popularised by the star in 1929, "Waiting for a Train" came to symbolize a harrowing point in American history; the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. Its relatable tale of an itinerant man without "a nickel" or "a penny" to get him home brought the realities of unemployment to life and turned Jimmie Rodgers into the voice of a generation. In 1956, Jim Reeves revived the iconic country track for his own recording of "Waitin' for a Train" which ironically arrived at a high point in his career: he had joined the Grand Ole Opry the previous year and just signed to RCA. "Waitin' for a Train" was later included on Jim Reeves' 1962 album for RCA Camden, The Country Side of Jim Reeves, and the Texas-born balladeer continued his hold on the country and pop charts throughout the early 1960s until his career was tragically cut short in 1964 due to his untimely death in an aeroplane accident.
