The lifeblood of Janis Joplin's criminally underrated debut album I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!, which was released in September 1969 and marked her first solo effort since leaving her band Big Brother and the Holding Company, "Kozmic Blues" positions the firebrand at the mountaintop of electrifying soul and blues, her characterful voice rasping and roaring along to lines like "Dawn has come at last / Twenty-five years, honey just in one night, oh yeah / Well, I'm twenty-five years older now / So I know we can't be right / And I'm no better, baby / And I can't help you no more / Than I did when just a girl," and casting a spell with this song that she took to Woodstock in 1969. Owing to her incendiary live performance of "Kozmic Blues," the track is considered a Janis Joplin essential and was featured on the 1995 album, 18 Essential Songs, which was certified gold by the RIAA.
