Heavy metal pioneers Iron Maiden released their sixth studio album Somewhere in Time in 1986. Written and recorded after months of arduous touring, Somewhere in Time marks a refinement of the band’s trademark sound and a shift in their sonic identity, thanks to the incorporation of guitar synthesizers and experimentation with new equipment. One of the album’s highlights is the closing track “Alexander the Great.” As the name implies, the song tells the story of Alexander the Great, who became king of ancient Macedon at only 19 years old after the assassination of his father, Philip II of Macedon. Going on to rule most of the known world, Alexander the Great became a legendary figure and the inspiration for this song. “Alexander the Great” was written by Steve Harris and produced by Martin Birch. Its parent album, Somewhere in Time, would go on to peak at Number 3 on the UK Albums chart and Number 11 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
