"Obstacle 1" is a track from American post-punk act Interpol's critically acclaimed debut album, Turn on the Bright Lights. It was written by Paul Banks, Carlos Dengler, Sam Fogarino, and Daniel Kessler, and produced by Gareth Jones and Peter Katis. Musically speaking, "Obstacle 1" served as an introduction to Interpol's post-punk revival style, entwining brooding lyrics with melancholic guitar riffs and a tight rhythm section. Its cryptic lyrics, which largely explore themes of mourning and regret, were inspired by the news of a model having recently committed suicide when the band was just starting. Although it achieved a peak position of Number 72 on the UK Singles Chart, "Obstacle 1" was remixed by producer Arthur Baker and reissued in 2003, reaching Number 41 in the United Kingdom shortly after.
