"Defying Gravity" is a show-stopping musical number from the hit show Wicked, performed in the original Broadway production by Idina Menzel. Composed by Stephen Schwartz, the song was initially recorded by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in 2003, and released as part of the original Broadway cast recording. Idina Menzel, renowned for her role as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, delivers a powerful and impassioned performance in this piece, which serves as the climactic finale of the show's first act. "Defying Gravity" is a pivotal moment in Wicked, both narratively and musically; it marks Elphaba's transformation and her resolve to challenge the oppressive structures in Oz, defying the Wizard's sinister plans. In 2007, Idina Menzel released a pop mainstream remix of the song as a single, which was later included in the UK and iTunes versions of her album I Stand (2008). This version, produced by Glen Ballard, brings the song closer to the sound of pop music. It peaked at number 60 on the UK Singles chart.
