Metalcore mutants Ice Nine Kills put on a full-scale show for their sixth studio album The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood (2021), a homage to the horror canon with gruesome twists and scares at every turn. "Hip to Be Scared" is a Patrick Bateman-filled salute to Bret Easton Ellis's classic 1991 novel American Psycho, a razor-sharp satire on 1980s greed and excess, immortalised by Christian Bale in the hit 2000 movie adaptation. The track, which nods to the Huey Lewis and the News song "Hit to Be Square"—features vocals from Papa Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix, lines from Amercian Psycho, and was accompanied by a suitably scary American Psycho-themed video. Meanwhile, The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood became Ice Nine Kills's most colossal commercial triumph to date, peaking at number 18 on the US Billboard 200 as well as sailing to the summit of the Hard Rock Albums chart.
