The reputation of Chris Isaak's much-covered hit precedes it. This noirish soft-rock love letter was released in 1989 and found fame the following year after it was featured in David Lynch's Wild at Heart. For their thrasy cover version, Finnish band HIM pick up the lyrical baton from Chris Isaak to whisper intense sweet nothings to the song's protagonist ("The world was on fire / And no one could save me but you / It's strange what desire / Will make foolish people do I'd never dreamed that I'd meet / Somebody like you / And I'd never dreamed that I'd need / Somebody like you") while adding a faster-paced electric guitar backdrop that gives the smoldering song a harder edge. This cover marked HIM's third single and breakthrough track at home in Finland, first appearing on their 1996 debut EP 666 Ways to Love: Prologue, and released in 1998 as a single from their debut album Greatest Lovesongs Vol 666.
