1980s black comedy masterpiece Heathers became a lodestar of the teen movie universe, blazing a trail for beloved blockbusters like Mean Girls through its exploration of the dark, murderous side of high school cliques. Directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters, this 1989 cult favourite refuses to die, and was reborn as a musical in the late-00s. Capturing the vindictive spirit of the movie's leads, "Never Shut Up Again" was created in 2018 by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy as a song for Heather Duke to celebrate her newfound dominance ("All hail the queen / I wear the red (Never shut up again) / The scrunchie's on my head"). In the movie, the scrunchie becomes a symbol of power; Heather Duke claims Heather Chandler’s scrunchie after her death. "Never Shut Up Again" was recorded by the West End ensemble cast of Heathers the Musical, with all three Heathers given a solo part in the song.
