Halsey's got a lot to say and she isn't afraid to say it on the bold electronic pop of "I Am Not a Woman, I'm God." Set to a soundtrack of seething, gothic electro-rock, this stomping song explores the societal pressures and preconceptions surrounding women's bodies, evoking Freud's Madonna-Whore complex in its lyrics. "I am not a woman, I'm a god / I am not a martyr, I'm a problem / I am not a legend, I'm a fraud / So keep your heart 'cause I already got one," she declares. The pulsating track is the lead single and centrepiece of Halsey's fourth studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power, which came out in August 2021. The American singer and songwriter wrote the album while pregnant, and uses it as a vehicle through which to explore the concept of motherhood. The record was crafted with the industrial-sized talent of Nine Inch Nails' legend Trent Reznor, who produced the album along with NIN bandmate and co-conspirator Atticus Ross.
