In 2021, rock's controversial and world-dominating rebels Guns N' Roses got the "most dangerous" band in the world back together and released "Absurd," their first new material since 2008's Chinese Democracy album. "Hard Skool" followed in "Absurd's" wake, with both singles originally conceived during the Chinese Democracy writing sessions when both Slash and Duff McKagan were not in the band. The track finds Axl Rose reflecting on his attitudes, dealing out vital lessons about the trials and tribulations of rock 'n' roll fame. "But you had to play it cool, had to do it your way / Had to be a fool, had to throw it all away," he wails. "Too hard school and you thought you were here to stay / If that were true, it wouldn't matter anyway." The comeback anthem went to Number 9 on the Billboard 200, with 1988 epic "Sweet Child o' Mine," to date the band's only single to top the Billboard Hot 100.
