In 1970, the Grateful Dead swapped freewheeling, psychedelic wig-outs for a catchy folk ballad infused with notes of bluegrass. "Uncle John's Band" stays in your head, and shows the legendary band in fine acoustic and three-part harmony-rich form, taking cues from the legendary Crosby, Stills and Nash and Young– who later covered the song live during their 2009 US concert tour – and from hitmakers Simon and Garfunkel. The identity of Uncle John and the song's meaning is open to interpretation – it could even be a knowing self-reference to the band themselves – but that's all part of the fun. Written by the inimitable Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter, "Uncle John's Band" saw the Grateful Dead reach a wider audience and gain their first chart hit, with the track going to number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, but its status among Deadheads as one of the group's best-loved tunes prevails.
