"For Lovin' Me" is among Gordon Lightfoot's best-known tracks, a lonesome country folkie about a callous rolling stone galloping away from one of his many lovers. "That's what you get for lovin' me / That's what you get for lovin' me / Everything you have is gone," he confesses in the first verse, his warbling voice sounding deep and sombre. "For Lovin' Me" was first put on wax by folk legends Peter, Paul and Mary, who went to number 30 with the song in 1965. The late Canadian iconoclast Gordon Lightfoot, who died of natural causes on 1 May 2023 aged 84, put himself on the map with the single in 1966 and caught the ear of Bob Dylan's manager Albert Grossman, who encouraged the release of his debut album Lightfoot! that same year. The LP also featured "Early Morning Rain," to which Elvis Presley would later attach his name, a cover of "Changes" by Phil Ochs and Ewan MacColl's much-loved "The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face."
