As purveyors of joyously melodic, adrenalin-fulled ska-punk, Goldfinger know how to have fun. This euphoric sugar rush of a punk ditty – a choice cover of bilingual '80s mainstay "99 Red Balloons" ("99 Luftballoons") by German band Nena (who reached number one in various countries around the world in 1983 and 1984) – shows the band in their element. The Californian punks, who formed in 1994 and earned their place at the top table of third-wave ska revivalists with a string of hit songs and popular albums, first recorded this pumped-up interpretation of "99 Red Balloons" for their 1997 EP, Darrin's Coconut Ass. However, they decided to save the track for later and popped it on 2000 album Stomping Ground instead; their third full-length effort, produced by Tim Palmer and John Feldmann and mixed by Tim Palmer. Singer John Feldman pulled off the German bits of the song with the help of a German vocal coach.
