For a band like Metallica, who have made a name for themselves as pioneers of the metal genre as well as one of the most successful rock bands of all time, it’s hard to pin down a “signature song.” But their smash single “Enter Sandman,” from their much-acclaimed 1991 self-titled fifth album (known to many as The Black Album), is one of the best examples of what they do best. The opening riff is also immediately recognizable, which is why it makes sense that it’s been covered by so many different artists. The 2021 tribute album The Metallica Blacklist, which features artists of various genres covering songs from The Black Album, includes a version of “Enter Sandman” performed by Swedish rock band Ghost, who start their version as a gentle piano cover before kicking into a rocking full-band arrangement. This version of the song is very much in the spirit of the original, but the added piano provides an even more unnerving feeling to this dark bedtime story.
