“Amarillo by Morning" is a song that was originally written by country music singer-songwriter Terry Stafford along with Paul Fraser, initially recorded by Terry Stafford in 1973. And though Terry Stafford’s version came first, it was George Strait’s 1983 recording that made it an enduring hit. Lyrically, the song inhabits the perspective of a rodeo cowboy who is on his way to a country fair in Amarillo, Texas (so he needs to be “in Amarillo by morning”). The singer laments the hardships that he has to endure due to his occupation— including broken bones, divorce, and poverty—but he concludes that he wouldn’t trade it for the world. George Strait’s version was recorded for his Strait from the Heart album, produced by Blake Mevis. George Strait’s take on “Amarillo by Morning” was a huge hit, peaking at Number 4 on the US Billboard Country chart and becoming one of Strait’s most famous songs.
