"A Showman's Life" is a country music song penned by Canadian-American songwriter Jesse Winchester, whose extensive résumé includes having written hit songs for Elvis Costello, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, and The Everly Brothers, among many others. A traditional country tune about the disadvantages of life on the road, the track was first recorded by Jesse Winchester on his 1978 LP, A Touch on the Rainy Side. In 2003, American country musician Gary Allan recorded a rendition of "A Showman's Life" featuring the legendary Willie Nelson on his fifth studio album, See If I Care. However, country eminence George Strait would give that iconic duo a run for their money on his 2011 album, Here For a Good Time. Sung as a duet with singer Faith Hill, George Strait's take on "A Showman's Life" adds an additional layer of gravitas only a seasoned performer like him could bring. Despite not having been released as a promotional single, his rendition of the song helped its parent album reached the top of the US country charts.
