Released as a single prior to The Beatles' imminent breakup, "The Long and Winding Road" was the Fab Four's last Number 1 hit in the United States. Although credited to Lennon-McCartney, the song was written by Paul McCartney about the rising tensions that would eventually lead the band to its demise. Featuring lush orchestral arrangements and multiple overdubs courtesy of producer Phil Spector, known for his sprawling Wall of Sound technique, the studio treatment of "The Long and Winding Road" was the subject of heated arguments between McCartney and the rest of his bandmates, who decided to call it quits in late 1970. Included in their twelfth and final studio album Let It Be, "The Long and Winding Road" signified the end of an era for the legendary Liverpool band. Since its release, many cover versions have been recorded, including a heartfelt rendition by English singer George Michael at the Royal Albert Hall memorial concert for Linda McCartney in 1999.
