Finding fame in the closing credits of the 1989 buddy cop action movie Lethal Weapon 2 – which starred Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, and others – “Cheer Down” was co-written with the late Tom Petty whose heartland rock stamp lights up the track. Co-produced with Jeff Lynne and helmed by George Harrison, the song's title takes inspiration from his wife Olivia, who would often tell the Beatles to 'cheer down' when he was being too animated, with lines like "I can see by your grin / That you're trembling within / It's all over town, cheer down" and "I'm going to love you instead / The world loves a clown, cheer down / I want you around, cheer down," also conveying their romantic bond. "Cheer Down" was featured on George Harrison's Best of Dark Horse 1976–1989 and Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison (2009) compilation albums, while a live version recorded with Eric Clapton was included on George Harrison's 1992 album Live in Japan.
