"Hold your breath / Make a wish / Count to three," commands Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, his voice sounding as smooth and creamy as the chocolate at the heart of the film. Written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, this orchestral pop confection "Pure Imagination" serves as the film's main sonic attraction, encapsulating the magical, whimsical, childlike wonder and deliciousness of the Willy Wonka universe ("Come with me and you'll be / In a world of pure imagination"). The tune soundtracks a key moment in the movie where the five Golden Ticket winners enter the Chocolate Room and has since been covered by everyone from Josh Groban, Harry Connick, Fiona Apple, and Buckethead. In 2023, "Pure Imagination" was given new life by A-lister Timothée Chalamet as Willy Wonka in the 2023 prequel film Wonka, which was directed by Paul King.
