One of New York's best-loved anthems, "New York, New York" first came to light as the theme song for Martin Scorsese's 1977 musical drama film of the same name, starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli. "Theme from New York, New York" – to give the song its official title – was made famous by the one and only Frank Sinatra, who recorded the theatrical pop classic for his 1980 album Trilogy: Past Present Future. Created by composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb (who gave us hooky lines like "I wanna wake up in a city that doesn't sleep / And find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap"), "New York, New York," had been given its first live airing by Frank Sinatra on September 13, 1978, at New York City's Radio City Music Hall and subsequently became a signature tune and a Top 40 hit for the star US crooner – who would often perform the song with New York, New York movie star Liza Minnelli.
