British-American rock band Foreigner were at a crossroads in 1981. Not only were they feeling the need to change their sound from a harder-edged hard rock act to something simpler and more broadly accessible, but they were also faced with the question of how to do so with a reduced line-up. By the time they convened to record their fourth studio album (1981’s 4), the group was down to four members from six. Girl on the Moon,” one of the album’s most popular songs, reflects the change in the band’s sound very clearly; bringing a more defined pop structure to their music as well as more radio-friendly guitar arrangements and clearer melodies. Girl on the Moon explores the subject of anonymity in romantic encounters, with the song’s dark and mysterious vibe mirroring the lyrics about trying to find more information about an unknown girl. The song was written by Mick Jones and Lou Gramm, and produced by Mick Jones with Robert “Mutt” Lange. 4 was a success, peaking at Number 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, and Number 5 on the UK Albums chart.
