Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters in the wake of Kurt Cobain's death in 1994 and released an eponymous debut album the following year. However, it was the band's breakthrough second LP, 1997’s The Colour and the Shape – with guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith all on board as band members – that helped them to cement their status as chart-friendly purveyors of modern rock, packing power-ballads and sentimental moments into a now-classic album. Landing at Number three on the US Billboard Alternative Songs chart and the Canadian RPM Rock/Alternative chart, "Everlong" is one of the LP's hit singles, written by Dave Grohl about his relationship with Veruca Salt frontwoman Louise Post, following his divorce from photographer Jennifer Youngblood. This stripped-back acoustic version was featured on the band's Greatest Hits album of 2009 and poignantly became the last song performed live by late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins before his death in March 2022.
