Eva Cassidy applied her fragile soprano voice and guitar skills to longstanding Irish folk ballad and funeral favourite "Danny Boy," which has been recorded over the years by everyone from Bing Crosby and Johnny Cash to Diana Krall. Eva Cassidy's haunting version of the song was featured on the late artist's sixth album and third studio album, which was released in 2002, six years after her death from melanoma cancer. The album reached number 32 on the US Billboard 200 while over in the UK it became Eva Cassidy's second number one album. The lyrics for "Danny Boy" were written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly in 1910, who was moved to create the song after his Irish-born sister sent him the Irish melody "Londonderry Air" in 1913. "Danny Boy" was later brought to America by Irish immigrants in the 1920s and became an anthem of the Irish diaspora, as well as one of the most well-known Irish songs in the world.
