During her prolific and celebrated career, Etta James moved fluidly between rock 'n' roll, blues, and more, building huge soul structures with her powerful voice, which is considered to be one of the 20th century's greatest. Written by Billy Davis, "Seven Day Fool" was first recorded by Etta James for Argo Records (a subsidiary of Chess Records) in 1961. "And on a Monday, I'm gonna love ya / And on a Tuesday, I'm gonna hug ya / And on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday / Saturday, Sunday, gonna love ya," she proclaims in the opening verse, backed by a tapestry of orchestral embellishments. Despite its towering R&B presence, "Seven Day Fool" was a slow-burner that took a while to fully catch fire. Released both on a 45 RPM single with "It's Too Soon to Know," and on Etta James's album 1961 album The Second Time Around, it the song reached number 95 in the US but went on to acquire star status on the UK's northern soul and mod circuits.
