By the mid-1970s, the middle-of-the-road ballads that had made British pop singer Engelbert Humperdinck so popular in the first place had fallen out of fashion on the international singles charts. In order to revitalize his career, he entered the studio with producers Joel Diamond and Charles Calello in 1976 to begin working on new material. Released later that year, After the Lovin' became his best-selling album in the United States since his 1969 eponymous LP, reaching Number 17 on the Billboard 200. This success was largely thanks to the title track, a lavish easy listening track written by Ritchie Adams and Alan Bernstein. In 1977, "After the Lovin'" shot straight to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart and peaked at Number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, obtaining Gold certification in the US shortly after. That year, its parent album also received a nomination for Best Vocal Pop Performance, Male at the Annual Grammy Awards.
