Elvis Presley poured his passion for gospel songs into 1957's Peace in the Valley EP but "His Hand in Mine" notably formed the backbone of his first full-length gospel album of the same name. Recorded in 1960, the LP lit the path for two other gospel-centric albums to follow suit: 1967's How Great Thou Art, which won Elvis Presley his first Grammy for Best Sacred Album, and 1972's second Grammy winner, He Touched Me. "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" grew up singing gospel songs and hymns at church in Tupelo, Mississippi, and on this haunting album opener, "His Hand in Mine," he showcases the strength and depth of that connection, aided by trusted backing vocalists The Jordanaires and pianist Floyd Cramer. The spiritual song was written by Mosie Lister and captured by the Statesmen Quartet in 1953. As well as including it on his 1960 album, Elvis Presley released "His Hand in Mine" as a single for Easter in March 1969.
