Multiple questions punctuate Elvis Presley's dejected letter to his ex. "Are you lonesome tonight? Do you miss me tonight? / Are you sorry we drifted apart? / Does your memory stray to a brighter summer day / When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?" "Are You Lonesome Tonight," which was written by Roy Turk and Lou Handman in 1926 and recorded several times in 1927, was brought to life by the "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" in April 1960 following his two-year stint in the US Army and was encouraged to record the song by his manager Colonel Tom Parker, whose wife, Marie Mott, professed it to be her favorite. "Are You Lonesome Tonight" was a huge hit for Elvis Presley, spending six weeks at the top of the US Hot 100 between November 1960 and January 1961 as well as becoming a chart-topper in the UK. The song has been covered by various artists over the years including Donny Osmond and Bryan Ferry.
