Released in 1945, It’s Only a Paper Moon is a jazz standard performed by Ella Fitzgerald with accompaniment by The Delta Rhythm Boys. The song was recorded for Decca Records and became one of Ella Fitzgerald’s most celebrated tracks, showcasing her impeccable vocal delivery and the tight harmonies of the Delta Rhythm Boys. Originally titled If You Believed in Me,” the track was composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg and Billy Rose. It was first introduced in the 1932 Broadway show The Great Magoo, which was set in Coney Island. Despite the show's failure, the song found new life when it was featured in the 1933 film Take a Chance, where it was sung by June Knight and Charles "Buddy" Rogers. It’s Only a Paper Moon reached number three on the Billboard charts and remained in the top 10 for nine weeks, solidifying its place in the American songbook. Over the years, It’s Only a Paper Moon has been covered by numerous artists, including Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra.
