"A House Is Not a Home" has undergone numerous refits and renovations over the years, with Dionne Warwick first claiming the ballad as her own in 1964 and Luther Vandross scoring a hit in 1981 on his debut album Never Too Much. In 1969, "The First Lady of Song" wrapped her luxe voice around the Burt Bacharach and Hal David-penned track for her 1969 live album Sunshine of Your Love. "A chair is still a chair / Even though there's no-one sitting there / But a chair is not a house / And a house is not a home / When there's no-one there to hold you tight / And no-one there you can kiss goodnight," she croons on this proverb-turned-standard that reminds us of the importance of domestic harmony. The song was later parodied in 1974 by psychedelic rockers Love who transformed the ballad into a gnarly prog epic with a dark spirit ("A cracked mirror 'mid the drapes of the landing: / Split image, labored understanding... / I'm only trying to find a place to hide my home."
