The track is the penultimate number on Ed Sheeran's candid sixth studio album, - (Subtract), which he was inspired to write following the death of his best friend Jamal Edwards in 2022 and his then-pregnant wife Cherry Seaborn's cancer diagnosis. He opened up about his heartbreaking year in a Disney+ documentary series, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All—airing just before the album—which he says lays bare his “deepest, darkest thoughts.” Released in May 2023 and counting Aaron Dessner among its producers, (Subtract) went to number one all over the world.
