Ed Sheeran closed the lid on his mathematical-themed album series with the final chapter in 2023, − ("Subtract"), marking the end of a decade-long collection that began with the 2011 debut ‘+’ ("Plus"). Never one to rest on his laurels, he followed − ("Subtract") with another album of original material, the apple pie-flavoured Autumn Variations, which was released, aptly, in the fall of 2023 on his own Gingerbread Man Records. The LP gave Ed Sheeran his seventh number-one on the UK Albums Chart. "Midnight" is the ninth track on the Aaron Dessner-produced record—which draws inspiration from composer Edward Elgar’s 1899 piece "Enigma Variations"—and finds the UK pop great celebrating love, driven by the central conceit of ending a bad day 'at midnight in your arms'. "I worry till there's nothin' left / But, in this darkness, you're my sun," he sings hopefully in the chorus, over a volley of electronic drum beats and folk-pop guitar.
