Baltimore boyband Dru Hill ruled the R&B roost during the 1990s and 2000s, serving up a chocolate box full of soft-centre weepies across four albums, which began with their self-titled debut for Island Records in 1996. High school pals Sisqó, Jazz, Woody Rock, and Nokio, formed Dru Hill in 1992 in Baltimore, with the city’s Druid Hill Parks providing the inspiration for their name. Closing out their aforementioned debut LP, the harmony-rich heart-on-its-sleeve "5 Steps" is a far cry from the "Thong Song" megahit with which Sisqó later made his name. Instead, the group opt for smooth and sophisticated gospel-tinged R&B to convey deep feelings of pain and regret that unfold over five minutes. Alongside other singles "Tell Me," "In My Bed," and "Never Make A Promise," "5 Steps" helped to propel Dru Hill into the Billboard 200 top 40, where it peaked at number twenty-three.
