Released on July 7, 1992, Dream Theater's second studio effort Images and Words is widely perceived as the most commercially successful album of their extensive career. It was also the first one to feature new vocalist James LaBrie, who filled in for Charlie Dominici. Apart from the promotional singles "Pull Me Under" and "Another Day," Images and Words featured the upbeat progressive ballad "Surrounded," one of the most accessible songs in their entire catalog. Written by keyboardist Kevin Moore and guitarist John Petrucci, "Surrounded" is said to be dedicated to tennis player Arthur Ashe, who died of AIDS only a year after the album's release. Lyrically speaking, it is one of Dream Theater's more abstract songs – making extensive use of cryptic language and imagery to convey a message of spiritual awakening. Though rarely played live, "Surrounded" has appeared in the live albums Live at the Marquee (1993) and Chaos in Motion: 2007–2008 (2008).
