Written by US poet and songwriter Shel Silverstein, "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" paints a maudlin portrait of disillusioned housewife Lucy Jordan "in her white suburban bedroom / In a white suburban town" who spends her days cleaning the house for hours and rearranging flowers. Lucy Jordan dreams of the life she will never have "At the age of 37 / She realised she'd never ride through Paris / In a sports car, with the warm wind in her hair," sings Dr. Hook's lead vocalist Dennis Locorriere in the chorus. "Ballad of Lucy Jordan" was originally recorded by soft rockers Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, with the name spelled "Jordon," and was released as a single in 1974. In 1979, Marianne Faithfull released a version of the song that was featured on her critically acclaimed seventh studio album Broken English, while it has also been covered by Lee Hazlewood, on his album 20th Century Lee and Belinda Carlisle, on her album A Woman and a Man, among others.
