"Winter in America" is the only hit song by Australian singer-songwriter Doug Ashdown. Originally titled "Leave Love Enough Alone," the track was first released in 1974 but it failed to enter any charts. After being re-released in 1976 as "Winter in America," the song became a minor hit in Australia, reaching Number 14 in Melbourne and Number 30 in Sydney. It also enjoyed a great deal of popularity in Belgium and the Netherlands, where it broke into the Top 20. Written by Doug Ashdown and Jimmy Stewart, "Winter in America" is a heartwrenching tale of a man abandoned by his partner during the month of December, a story in which the narrator opens up about his feelings of sadness and regret but still wishes her the best. In the years that followed, the song was covered by Marco Bakker (1984), Gerard Cox (1987), René Froger (1988), and The Robertson Brothers (1994). A Dutch version by The Kik titled "December" appeared in 2014.
